Stevia in Colombia
Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a plant which produces a variety of high-potency, low-calorie sweetener in its leaf tissue. Its sweetening potential is considered to be 300 times greater than sucrose. Rebiana is a zero-calorie, high-purity extract of at least 97 percent rebaudioside-A (Reb A), the best-tasting of the sweet compounds (steviol glycosides) present in stevia leaves.
Colombian Stevia cultivation area has increased during the last 5 years and it currently grows approximately between 70 and 80 metric tons of Stevia leaves per year. Llanos Orientales, Tolima, Huila are some of the regions where Stevia is found.
China is the largest Stevia grower and Stevia extract exporter in the world.
